The FDA has issued a nationwide health alert following at least 29 illnesses and at least one hospitalization linked to Purity First vitamin supplements. FDA lab analysis found the products laced with anabolic steroids. Our Pearland vitamin recall attorneys had already written about the requested recall for the Healthy Life Chemistry by Purity First B-50 supplements that FDA lab analysis found contained dimethazine and methasterone, a Class III controlled substance.
The voluntary recall by Purity First has now been expanded to the Purity First vitamin C and the Purity First multi-mineral supplements. The FDA said late on Thursday that most of the products from Purity First Health First Products Inc. are subject to the voluntary recall due to anabolic steroid ingredients. The anabolic steroids, apparently not disclosed as ingredients, could cause physiological harm. And the methasterone could cause some risk of physical and/or psychological dependence.
Women that have taken the vitamin supplements laced with anabolic steroids reported symptoms that made them more masculine like a deeper voice, facial hair, and a loss of menstrual cycles. Men reported low testosterone and a loss of libido. Our Pearland vitamin recall attorneys remark that patients affected by the symptoms ranged from age 12 to age 75.
Candice Tripp, who owns Purity First, indicated she did not know how the steroid contaminants came to be in her products, but that she is cooperating with authorities in the matter. As initial reports indicated that the company had refused the FDA’s request for a voluntary recall, we believe that this must mean that she has now agreed to the recall.
The vitamin supplements were actually manufactured by Mira Health Products in Farmingdale, Long Island. That company also disclaims knowledge of how the supplements became contaminated. (Source: Delthia Ricks, News 12 Newsday, 8/2/13)

Compared to Foods, Pharmaceuticals, and Beverages, the US FDA has Limited Authority to Oversee Vitamin Supplement Safety
The Pearland vitamin recall attorneys at Denena Points, PC emphasize that current regulatory authority generally limits the FDA to requesting a voluntary recall when it receives reports of a dangerous vitamin supplement product. You ingest vitamins just as you ingest food and beverages and pharmaceuticals, so if those supplements are contaminated, the consequences could be as serious for your health as from tainted food or medications.
One study this year indicated that over half of major FDA recalls were for supplements in the years from 2004 to 2012. Candice Tripp mentioned that she feels the government is trying to drive small vitamin supplement manufacturers out of business. In any event, our Pearland vitamin recall attorneys note that as with any products you ingest, it’s important to be aware of current recall information and health warnings. And to seek medical treatment as soon as possible if you experience adverse health events from the products.
