U.S. FDA recalls dangerous Respironics medical devices for serious defects

Galveston medical device injury lawyers report: The U.S. FDA recently announced the recall of the Trilogy 100, 200, and 202 respirator medical devices made by Respironics, Inc. The Trilogy ventilator units are intended to provide continuous or sometimes intermittent breathing support for patients ranging from babies of 11 pounds or more to adult patients. The Trilogy medical devices can be found in homes, hospitals, and nursing homes throughout the nation.

The model numbers included in the Trilogy medical device recall are: 1032800, 1040004, 1040007, 1054096, 1054260, CA1032800, R1040004, R1054655, and 1045151. The Trilogy ventilators affected by the Respironics recall were manufactured from January 1, 2012 through April 27, 2012.

The FDA classified the Respironics ventilator recall as a Class I recall, which is the agency’s most urgent recall warning. Our Galveston medical device injury lawyers point out that the FDA only issues a Class I recall when it has determined that there exists a possibility of serious injury or death from the medical device.

Respironics has recalled the Trilogy respirator units due to defective power supply components. The defective components could cause the ventilators’ power supply to fail. When the power supply fails, the ventilator will suddenly stop functioning, stopping medically necessary ventilation, which could lead to serious injury or death. The recall advises that defects might also cause the ventilator alarm not to sound, so you won’t know that ventilation has stopped.

Patients, caregivers, and health care professional concerned about the recall can contact Respironics customer service at 877-387-3311. They can also report adverse events from the Trilogy medical devices or quality problems to the FDA Safety Information and Adverse event Reporting System, MedWatch.
