Roller coaster injury lawyers note that the Stinger is the newest roller coaster ride at South Whitehall Township’s Dorney Park. The train became stuck on the lift tail on Wednesday afternoon as riders were being conveyed up the 138-foot high track. The Stinger’s track carries riders through 6 inverted flips at speeds up to 55 mph (when it’s not stuck).
Park officials had called a rescue team, but were able to get the train moving again and bring it back to the station in reverse after riders had been trapped on the ride for about 90 minutes. Our roller coaster injury lawyers mention that the riders were able to exit the train in the normal manner at the station and continue to enjoy the other rides in the park
Dorney Park shut down the Stinger until such time as investigators could determine what caused the train to malfunction. A park spokeswoman said that the cause of the ride’s failure was unknown, but that they would continue to test it until they found what caused the train to become stuck as it lifted riders up the track.
Dorney Park purchased the ride from California’s Great America Park. Reportedly the ride had trapped 24 riders in 2009 for several hours due to a mechanical failure. Dorney Park officials had previously stated that the Stinger had experienced an overhaul that included upgraded control systems, and newly installed drive and mechanical systems prior to going into operation at the park. No one was injured in the incident in California where the train trapped riders for hours on the track, and according to news media, no one was injured in the stalled train incident in Pennsylvania either.
Our roller coaster injury lawyers are relived to hear of the safe exit of the riders, and the lack of injuries from the Stinger mishap. We laud Dorney Park for taking careful steps to return the riders safely to the station and for their precautionary efforts to ensure that the train is safe for continued usage. Roller coaster accidents can sometimes turn deadly in the absence of adequate safety controls.
