Bicyclist Injuries and Fatalities get Underreported in Texas Statistics

In Texas, bicyclist injuries from traffic accidents tend to be heavily undercounted because only those accidents where the motor vehicle sustains enough damage to need towing get reported to the Texas DPS (Department of Public Safety). And how often will a wreck with a bicyclist damage a car enough to make it need a tow? Even where the accident is fatal to the bicyclist, if the car doesn’t need to be towed, the Texas DPS generally doesn’t get that accident added into its statistical count.

For instance, a TxDOT report on fatal accidents by vehicle type in 2011 shows only 49 fatal bicycle accidents. Our Texas injury attorneys point out that the same report shows only 1,262 serious injuries. The numbers are nearly as low for pedestrian accidents.

But the risks are clear. Pedestrians and bicyclists don’t stand a chance in collisions with motor vehicles. And motor vehicle drivers, as the case mentioned in this blog reveals, might well take use the advantage represented by their larger, sturdier vehicle to flee the scene of an accident, leaving the injured bicyclist or pedestrian without recourse.
