Seastreak Ferry that Crashed Before Crashes into NYC Dock Injuring 85 | DENENA | POINTS

Wednesday morning about 8:45 a.m., surprised passengers were thrown into the air, onto the deck, and down stairs when a high-speed Seastreak Ferry headed from Highlands, New Jersey to the Wall Street Financial District Pier 11 failed to slow before crashing into the dock. The crash ripped a sizable gash in the side of the almost 131-foot long ferry.

85 people were injured, two of them critically, by the ferryboat accident. One critically injured man had been hurled down the stairs into a window on impact. Witnesses said the Seastreak Ferry didn’t seem to slow before docking, but just came to an abrupt halt, like in a car crash, when it rammed into the Pier 11 dock. People were knocked unconscious, and many were left bleeding on the deck after impact. Emergency workers turned the Pier 11 dock into a triage area where many of the injured were strapped to gurneys and transported to the hospital. The thoughts and prayers of our experienced injury attorneys are with all of the injured at this time.

Reportedly, that very Seastreak Ferry had already been involved in two previous crashes. In a 2009 crash, the ferry slammed into a New Jersey dock, ripping a gash in the starboard side bow. Then in 2010, the same ferry crashed into a dock pile, punching a hole in the port side hull.

Our experienced injury attorneys mention that the NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board) has opened a full investigation into the ferryboat accident. The ferry was carrying 326 people at the time of the Pier 11 impact, 5 of them crewmembers. (Sources: CNN and Aaron Katersky, Emily Friedman, and Alyssa Newcomb, ABC News, 1/9/13)

Drug and alcohol tests have already been conducted on the Seastreak Ferry’s captain and crew, all of whom passed the breath tests. The blood test results won’t be ready for at least several days. Authorities have ruled out weather as a factor in the ferryboat accident. But recent changes and upgrades to the ferry’s propulsion system are being looked at as a possible source of equipment failure. Our experienced injury attorneys note that the ferryboat was inspected just a few months ago in July.
