On rollovers, roller coasters, and Texans who suffer because of them

Our Houston injury lawyers bring to your notice two product defect matters that have been receiving attention in the news lately.

1. Goodyear has finally issued a recall on some of its Wrangler Silent Armor tires, but only after two young Texans died in a terrible rollover crash in August 2011 following a tire tread separation on one of their Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armor tires. Reportedly, Goodyear knew of a problem with these tires as early as March 2010 because of excessive warranty and accident claims.

2. The Houston Rodeo Carnival has replaced the Hi-Miler roller coaster on the midway and instituted some additional ride safety measures at this year’s Rodeo Carnival. But this occurs only after a man fell to his death from the ride last year for reasons that are still in dispute. Surviving family members claim that a defective lap bar safety restraint that didn’t stay properly latched contributed to the cause. And previous news reports have indicated that other riders of the Hi-Miler had reported the same problem on the same seat of the same car from which the man fell. The Rodeo and ride operators had received such reports as early as two years prior to the man’s death.

Our Houston injury lawyers point out that these two very different fatal accidents have a striking similarity at heart: the corporate entities responsible for the safety of users of their products ignored reports of the problem and took no remedial action until it was too late for some victims. But ignoring a problem doesn’t make it go away. As with alcoholism, denying the existence of the problem only permits it to continue unabated and take a greater toll.

Our Houston injury lawyers are concerned at the tendency among those responsible for product users’ safety to minimize reports of product dangers. It concerns us that lives apparently must be lost before companies will take action to remove dangerous products from use. No one’s life or safety deserves to be minimized for corporate profits.
