Our roller coaster injury attorneys have mentioned before that one good safety precaution for avoiding the risk of injury on a ride is to never make children get on a ride that might frighten them. Some children indicate specifically when a ride looks frightening to them. Others might be fearful regarding most rides, in which case it’s best not to try and coax them into riding, even if you think a ride is perfectly harmless.
Boy, 5, Receives Serious Injuries Trying to Jump to Safety after Becoming Scared on Sea Serpent Ride in Coney Island
The roller coaster injury attorneys at Denena Points, PC report a recent incident at Coney Island where a child just tried to jump off a ride in motion when he became frightened. Pradipla Sutradhar, 5, was on the Sea Serpent roller coaster designed for young children on Wednesday. The boy jumped out of the car he was in at the top of an incline and fell between two cars.
He apparently landed 6 feet below in a way that wedged his leg between the track and the Sea Serpent cars and suffered a broken leg and several serious leg and head lacerations as his mother and sister watched in horror. Some reports indicate that the boy’s sister suffered some minor leg injuries. The injured boy was taken to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition.
The roller coaster injury attorneys at Denena Points, PC note that the NYC Department of Buildings inspected the ride and said it found no mechanical problems with the roller coaster. Dennis Vourderis, Vice President of Deno’s Wonder Wheel, which operates a section of the Coney Island amusement park, said that the boy’s lap bar had been securely fastened at the time of the accident, but that the boy had apparently wriggled under it and tried to get off the ride because “[h] e was frightened.” Pradipla Sutradhar reportedly met the ride’s 36-inch height requirement.
