The new motorcycle rider is likely to be:
· Affluent;
· Over 40;
· Riding an expensive bike like a Ducati; and
· A member of a weekend motorcycle hobbyist club rather than a “gang;” or
· Affluent;
· Under 30; and
· Riding an expensive Japanese “Supersport” bike.
It may be that the public perception of motorcyclists will catch up with the changing demographics of riders in some years. For now, media and public perception still seems mired in the old image of the bad, outlaw biker who rides recklessly to his own doom. While perceptions haven’t shifted much as yet, accident statistics have.
A recent NHTSA study shows a marked increase in motorcycle fatalities among riders over 40. They now represent over half of all motorcycle fatalities, up from just 33% in 1998. At the same time, fatalities among young riders have decreased sharply; but most of these fatalities occur on “Supersport” vehicles. Motorcycle riders are about 37 times more likely to die in a wreck than the occupants of enclosed vehicles.

Not only is bias an issue, but drivers of enclosed vehicles don’t always notice the smaller, slimmer motorcycle profile out on the road. Statistics show that about half of all bike wrecks with other vehicles occur at intersections. A surprising number of these happen as the car is turning left or pulling out in front of a bike that the driver just hasn’t noticed.
