A construction worker was pinned under a steel beam in Temple University’s new Science Education and Research Center when part of the fifth floor collapsed. Our structural collapse injury attorneys note that the man had apparently been working on the fourth floor when the structural failure occurred.
It took rescue crews about an hour to extract the trapped worker. He received transport to the hospital for his injuries, where he was said to be in stable condition. A university spokesman said it appeared that a connection might have failed on the fifth floor and caused the steel beam to collapse. Authorities are investigating the floor collapse. Failure of Connections Presents the Most Common Cause of Structural Collapses
Connections between structural members can fail for a variety of reasons, including:
- Use of an improper type of connector, like nails rather than secure bolts;
- Using bolts or screws that are too short;
- Failing to properly anchor the connectors into the structural members:
- Attaching connectors at weak points; or
- Substandard materials use.
Sometimes connectors loosen and pull out during construction or demolition due to inadequate temporary bracing of structural members. Whatever the cause, our structural collapse injury attorneys emphasize that failure of even a single connection can be disastrous. Failure of a connection between parts of a structure remains the most commonly identified cause of total and partial building collapses.
