Clear Lake, TX Auto Defect Attorneys: NHTSA Investigating Jacks Sold with Mercury Monterey and Ford Freestar Minivans; Possible Failure in the Jacks Under the Weight of the Vehicles Could Cause Them to Fall on Anyone Working Underneath
Federal safety regulators from the NHTSA have begin an investigation relating to a possible safety defect in the service jacks sold with Mercury Monterey and Ford Freestar minivans from the 2004 and 2005 model years. The NHTSA says that 205,661 minivans are affected by the possible safety defect in the service jacks. The possible safety defect in the service jacks could cause the jacks to fail under the weight of the vehicles that they were intended to jack up. This sudden failure of the service jacks could cause the vehicles to fall suddenly and possibly crush anyone underneath.
The NHTSA states on its website that it has a report of a person killed while working under one of the affected minivans when the service jack failed and the minivan fell on the person. The NHTSA says that reported failures of the service jacks indicate that they failed at the slotted hinge joints. These hinge joints apparently separated under the vehicles’ weights. The federal safety regulators at the NHTSA caution people against using the Mercury Monterey and Ford Freestar minivan service jacks for anything but holding up the minivans while changing the tires.
Don’t get underneath one of these vehicles while it’s jacked up. The possible safety defect in the service jacks, according to at least one report, could prove deadly to anyone using the jacks while tinkering underneath their vehicles.
Cars, trucks, and minivans comprise intricate mechanisms with elaborate conjunctions of moving and stationary parts. Because of the complexity involved in their manufacture, these vehicles come with hidden defects more often than you might care to contemplate.
