The Many Potential Causes of a Dangerous Balcony Collapse

Our balcony collapse injury attorneys point out that one of the primary causes of structural collapses is a weakness in the connections between structural members. For instance, the connecting hardware might be corroded; the hardware might be inadequate in type, size, strength, or spacing to support the intended balcony loads; or the hardware might have loosened and pulled away from where it was connected. Using nails instead of bolts to anchor balconies or decks can be deadly.

Moisture seepage and rot in wood or masonry could also lead to sudden balcony collapses. Use of a purely “decorative” balcony not intended to support any additional weight in a place where people are likely to actually try and set foot on it is another problem that could cause devastating collapse injuries. Poor maintenance of the structure can also lead to excessive wear and sudden collapse.

And the age of the structure could sometimes be at fault. The balcony collapse injury attorneys at Denena Points, PC have written several articles cautioning that the average safe lifespan of an outdoor wooden deck or balcony is only about 15 to 20 years. And that lifespan could be considerably shorter in certain climates that tend to age and stress wood faster. Learn more about the causes of balcony collapse, how to prevent such collapses, and what to do if you’re injured in a sudden balcony collapse. Download our free report.
