Last Words as a Text Message: Texting while Driving a Fatal Mistake

A_stock_fence_with_a_difference_-_geograph.org.uk_-_1198966In 2008, 37,261 deaths occurred in 34,017 fatal road crashes in the United States. The U.S. NHTSA says that 5,870 of those deaths, or about 1 in 6, were linked to distracted driving, for example: texting while driving. Approximately another 500,000 people received injuries in these distracted driving crashes.

The Pearland car accident attorneys at Denena Points, PC emphasize that it takes only a second to veer from the road and crash. NHTSA data indicates that your crash risk is tripled if you dial a cell phone while you’re behind the wheel. Almost 20% of drivers under 20 who died in their crashes were using their cell phones at the time of the crash. And a study of the effect of cell phone use in truck drivers found that their crash risk increased by 23 times if they were texting while driving.

Live Longer, and Better: Avoid Texting while Driving

Our Pearland car accident attorneys point out that crashes caused by texting aren’t always fatal. Sometimes they just lead to disabling injuries. Or in the case of one man on Wednesday, to arrest. News accounts state that James Mazac was texting while driving on Wednesday night about 9 when his Dodge Durango veered off the road near the Nolan River Road and Katherine P. Raines Drive in Cleburne.

Mr. Mazac reportedly overcorrected the course of the Dodge Durango, which spun out, hit a culvert, and flipped over. James Mazac was lucky: he only suffered minor physical injuries from the serious crash. On the other hand, Cleburne police arrested him and charged him with driving while intoxicated.
