Joshua Philip Stutz, of Mauriceville, TX, died early Saturday morning in a crash with a car. The fatal crash happened about 1:00 a.m. in Orange County on westbound Highway 12 approximately 1 mile east of Highway 62. Accounts of the accident state that Joshua Stutz was speeding when he hit the rear of a car with his motorcycle. Mr. Stutz had no motorcycle helmet on at the time of his accident. Orange County Justice of the Peace, Derry Dunn, pronounced 27-year-old Joshua Stutz dead at the scene of the crash.
We condole with the Stutz family on their tragic loss of such a young family member to a deadly motorcycle accident. The accident accounts do not really give us enough information to know whether a motorcycle helmet would have changed the outcome of the crash. While wearing a helmet can help in a very large percentage of motorcycle accidents, some crashes are just too fast and some impacts just too severe.
The motorcyclist is exposed to the hazards of a crash in ways the occupant of an enclosed vehicle doesn’t even consider. It saddens us that almost every day in Texas, a biker – someone taking sensible measures to save furl and money – pays the ultimate price in a collision with a bigger, more fuel hungry vehicle. Such accidents are particularly unfortunate when they take the lives of those who normally would have had so many more years to look forward to. We understand the grief the Stutz family must feel at the loss of young Joshua Stutz, and we send them heartfelt sympathy at their loss.
