The injustice of inflated towing and repair charges after a Houston wreck

Our Houston accident attorneys note a report on KHOU that described the practice of some tow truck drivers and auto repair companies to exploit victims of vehicle accidents. The news report specifically names two companies that try to trick accident victims into signing papers giving the company the right to tow, store and repair vehicles at an inflated charge. Sometimes the vehicles in question have been completely totaled, and can’t be repaired.

The Houston accident attorneys at Denena & Points remind you that both Harris County and the City of Houston have capped the amount that companies can legally charge you to tow your vehicle after a wreck at $150. But some creative companies appear to have found a way around this cap by getting accident victims distracted and disoriented by their wrecks to send papers that include fees for storage, labor, repairs, yard and gate fess, and towing. After signing the papers, the accident victims can’t get their cars back without paying fees that run into hundreds or thousands of dollars.

Even if your car is totaled after a wreck, you might need the vehicle back so that investigators can examine it for specific accident causes. Their examination could be crucial to your claim for financial accident compensation.

KHOU’s account named Curtis Mounts, owner of Vickery Auto Storage and City Wide Collision Center, as one of those who would take advantage of vulnerable accident victims to make a buck. The news story mentioned that at least one of his companies had been fined $12,00 by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation for its business practices. Apparently, the company was later fined an additional $7,000 and the company’s license was placed under administrative hold.
