Monday morning just after 1 a.m., two men were killed when the white Volkswagen they were in crashed into the back of a blue Ford Expedition stalled in the 11400 block of the North Freeway in Houston. The driver of the Ford Expedition was not injured in the impact. But the 29-year-old driver of the Volkswagen and his 27-year-old passenger both perished from the high-speed impact. Authorities did not release their names. (Source: khou.com, 11/26/12)
Our Houston accident lawyers note that these two tragic deaths follow upon other fatal accidents in recent days involving crashes at night into fixed objects. In one deadly accident, an SUV crashed head-on into a parked ambulance killing the SUV driver and injuring the 7 occupants of the ambulance. In another fatal wreck, a man lost control on a curve and smashed into a concrete freeway barrier, killing himself and critically injuring his passenger.

Alarming Statistics on Deadly Crashes with Fixed Objects
The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) indicates that more than half of all crashes with fixed objects occur at night. Drivers often can’t see the object in time to avoid it. Sometimes they never see it at all before they crash. Our Houston accident lawyers caution that driving at high speed at night only increases the dangers from unexpected objects in the driver’s path. Parked or stalled vehicles, truck trailers, fallen cargo in the roadway, fallen trees or other debris, and roadway barriers are among the fixed objects with which unwary drivers most often collide.
Data from the NHTSA and the Texas Department of Public Safety says that in 2008, for example, 19% of fatal passenger car wrecks occurred when the car crashed into a fixed object. That’s almost one out of every five fatal car wrecks. 25% of fatal motorcycle accidents involved collisions with fixed objects. 14% of fatal light truck accidents and 4% of fatal semi truck accidents involved crashed into fixed objects.
