According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, traumatic brain injury impacts roughly 1.7 million American every year. Of course, this includes some relatively mild brain injuries like a mild concussion. But even a mild concussion can have wide reaching impact on the victim. Of these injuries, over 15% are caused by auto accidents.
Car accidents often occur without any warning to those involved. Every car accident, even a single vehicle accident, involves a car or cars that are really heavy moving at some speed. There are forces put on the human body whenever a car crash occurs. Additionally, even if the person is wearing a seat belt their body will be thrown around the car.
Granted, there are several safety features built into cars that are there to aid in injury prevention to the car occupants. The occupant safety system includes the seat belt webbing, seat belt buckle, seat belt pretensioners, front and side airbags. These systems don’t always work properly, but even when all components of the occupant safety system perform as designed some injuries will occcur. Injury is especially likely with more than one impact or as the body is thrown around the inside of the car.
As a general rule, your body will move toward the impact in a collision. For example, in a rear-end collision your body will move abruptly toward the reat or the vehcile. If the impact is large enough the energy that has loaded your body will then propel you forward. This reuslts in a second wave of force hitting your body. Likewise, in a head-on collision you will be propelled forward. Again, even when properly belted you may be thrown around the vehicle and hit parts of your body like your head on components within the vehicle.
A traumatic brain injury can occur from hitting an object or it can occur from the brain hitting the inside of the skull. In the rear-end collision, side-impact or t-bone collision or a frontal impact the brain will experience acceleration and deceleration forces. Like your body, your brain may ricochet around around inside the skull causing severe and irreparable injury.
