The highest number of traffic deaths in a year in the United States was in 1972 when 54,589 people were killed in road accidents. That’s almost twice the annual total of recent years.
The U.S. Department of Transportation first began releasing data on the annual number of accident fatalities in 1950. That data covered the year 1949, which has seen the lowest number of traffic deaths since data has been released: 30,246. Of course, estimates give much lower numbers of accident fatalities in the early years of car travel. For instance, an estimate says that 1921 had only 13,253 traffic fatalities. Traffic deaths reached a 63-year low last year in 2011, when there were only 32,367, the lowest number since 1949.
