7 Major Texas Accident Statistics to Know to Help You Avoid Wrecks in Your Town
TxDOT compiles accident report data from around the state in ways that tell us a lot about how we drive in Texas. The data helps the agency focus on needed safety measures, and it could help us to be alert for common risks and avoid them as we drive. For example, on urban roads in Texas, TxDOT says that:
- Drivers who disregarded stop signals caused about 20,000 accidents in 2011.
- Driver distraction or inattention to the road led to nearly 60,000 wrecks.
- More than 78,000 crashes were attributed to excessive speed.
- About 54,000 collisions occurred because a driver failed to yield the legal right-of-way to another vehicle.
- Unsafe lane changes caused over 17,000 wrecks.
- More than 18,000 collisions resulted from drivers following other vehicles too closely (yep, tailgating).
- And drugs or alcohol were linked to around 22,500 accidents.
Our Pearland personal injury lawyers note that those tens of thousands of accidents represent thousands of serious injuries and many fatalities as well. Know your risks on our Texas roads, stay alert, and drive safely.
