The recalled product involves dietary ingredients called galactooligosaccharides. The ingredient, sold under the name Purimune, is an indigestible fiber made from milk used to aid to both the immune system and digestive health. The product was produced at a plant in South Korea.
The Purimune had already been distributed and mixed into products around the world at the time that the salmonella contamination was discovered. The discovery prompted recalls as far away as New Zealand.
The possible contamination to dietary supplements using Purimune points up the need for greater safety oversight regarding dietary supplement products. The products generally aren’t subject to the FDA safety testing and oversight that pharmaceutical products recover.
