The FDA on Preventing Security Breaches in Medical Devices and Facilities

The U.S. GAO last year ordered the FDA to work on solutions to the problems of medical device software and other medical technologies that could be vulnerable to hackers, malware, or other computer glitches. Our Houston medical device injury attorneys note that the FDA took some eight months to issue guidelines for upgrading medical device cybersecurity, and here’s the essence of what they came up with:

  1. Contact the medical device’s manufacturer if you believe you might have a cybersecurity problem affecting the device. If you don’t know or can’t reach the manufacturer, the FDA, DHS, or ICS-CERT might be able to help with reporting and resolution of the problem.
  1. Restrict unauthorized access to the network and networked medical devices.
  1. Monitor the network’s activity for signs of unauthorized use.
  1. Keep antivirus software and firewalls up-to-date.
  1. Protect individual network components by conducting routine, periodic evaluations. Update security patches and disable unnecessary ports and services.
  1. Develop and evaluate strategies for maintaining critical functionality during adverse conditions.

OK, we ask you: is there anything new and startling here? Aren’t these all the type of things you probably do already for your home and office computer networks? Shouldn’t medical facilities have been doing all these things all along?
