The FDA has stepped up the warning level regarding the fatal heart arrhythmia risks associated with the popular antibiotic Zithromax, also called Z-Max, Z-Pak, or Azithromycin. Our Galveston drug injury lawyers note that the antibiotic has been popular because the required course of treatment is about half as long as for other antibiotics.
But the antibiotic Zithromax can also make the heart take longer to relax, leading to a sudden, fatal heart arrhythmia in susceptible patients. The patients known to be at higher risk for the fatal cardiac complications include people who already have heart problems particularly if they have slow heart rates, patients with low potassium levels, and older patients.
The fatal cardiac complications occur in only about 1 out of every 20,000 people who take the antibiotic Zithromax. But they have had little or no warning that anything might be wrong. They simply collapsed and died when their heart rhythm changed for the worse. Some few people experience warning symptoms and have time to quit taking the antibiotic and avoid fatal cardiac complications claiming their life. (Source: Christi Myers, KTRK abc13.com, 3/29/13)
