Fatal Work Accidents in College Station, TX and Roy, WA Cause Concern | DENENA | POINTS

The law firm of Denena Points, PC investigates and handles serious and fatal on-the-job injury lawsuits on behalf of victims and their families. Our Houston work accident attorneys were saddened and concerned to learn of a tragic fatal work accident in College Station, Texas on Tuesday morning. The fatal fall occurred at the site of the Texas A&M football stadium on Kyle Field. The venerable venue is undergoing a $450 million renovation, led by Manhattan-Vaughn Construction out of Houston, to make it the largest stadium in the SEC (Southeast Conference).

Around 11:30 a.m., 25-year-old Angel Garcia, an employee of Lindamood Demolition, was working on the project when he fell four stories at the north end of Kyle Field. He received rush transport to the regional medical center in Bryan where he died. OSHA was on the scene investigating along with local authorities. (UPI, 12/3/13) Possible causes of the fatal work accident were not yet released. The deepest sympathies of our Houston work accident attorneys go out to the family, friends, and colleagues of the young man who died from the tragic fall.

Due to the High Number of Fatal Falls on the Job, OSHA has Issued Numerous Safety Regulations Designed to Prevent such Tragedies

Based on the high percentage of fatal work accidents that occur from falls and in the construction industry, OSHA has issued a raft of rules regarding safe construction practices and safety precautions for employees working at heights above 30 feet. Local states and municipalities often have additional rules. And concerned employers might have their own additional safety precautions and employee training programs.

But not always. In Philadelphia, for instance, our Houston work accident attorneys emphasize that contractor Griffin Campbell was allowed to continue with unsafe demolition practices and procedures until a Center City demolition project collapsed into the Salvation Army thrift store next door, killing 6 employees and shoppers and injuring 14 others. The Philadelphia Department of Licenses and Inspections has been accused of slipshod practices that allowed unsafe demolition practices to go unhindered across the city.

The key point of failure in the Philadelphia building collapse appears to have been the removal of key structural supports, leaving three un-braced building stories to collapse into the thrift shop next door.

Structural Failure and Lives Lost in on-the-Job Building Collapses: Roy, WA

A similar structural collapse accident just took place at Wilcox Farms in Roy, Washington. A grain silo, holding around 50 tons of corn, collapsed and folded in upon itself, spilling tons of grain and debris from the silo into the adjacent building. There were four workers in that building next door when the collapse occurred. Three of them escaped. One man is still missing among the corn that filled that adjacent building during the disastrous collapse. Authorities say the structure is still dangerously unstable, hampering their rescue efforts. The man’s family and other people from the community have gathered nearby, hoping and waiting. (Alison Grande, kirotv.com, 12/3/13)

Our Houston work accident attorneys note that there was no word yet on what caused the sudden collapse of the silo. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends, and colleagues of the man trapped by the collapse.

If You’re Aware of Unsafe Working Conditions, Report Them

OSHA advises employers to learn all applicable workplace safety regulations and to provide  required safety equipment and training; follow work safety practices and regulations; and maintain equipment and structures in a safe condition. And where workers or others are aware of unsafe working conditions or practices, they should report them before serious accidents occur.
