Fatal Houston Pedestrian Accident: Important Pedestrian Safety Tips

Thursday night just after 8 p.m., a man crossed into a two-lane road under construction by walking out from between two orange barrels. The driver of an oncoming car at Aldine Mail Route Road and Reevestone Road apparently did not see the man and struck him. The pedestrian received transport to the hospital in critical condition.

Reports said he was fighting for his life. But charges seem unlikely in the case because the pedestrian stepped out in front of the car from between barrels that obscured his approach and in an area without a crosswalk. Important Safety Tips to Help Pedestrians avoid Serious and Fatal Injury on Busy Houston Roads

Unfortunately, accidents like the one that happened on Thursday night are all too common. Studies consistently reveal that drivers of motor vehicles are too preoccupied trying to watch for vehicles their own size or larger to notice pedestrians or bicyclists that step into the road unexpectedly. To help keep you safe when you’re walking, our Houston personal injury lawyers provide the following tips:

  1. Never enter a roadway from between orange barrels, parked vehicles, tress, shrubs, or any other obstacles that might obscure you from the view of approaching drivers.

  1. Don’t cross the street against the light or other traffic signals placed there for your protection. At intersections with “Walk” and “Don’t Walk” signals, wait for the “walk” signal in order to cross.

  1. Cross the street only at intersections or in designated crosswalks. If there are no crosswalks, traffic signals, or signs where you need to cross, always yield to motor vehicles.

  1. Since traffic might be approaching from several directions at once, always be sure to look right, left, ahead, and over your shoulder for approaching vehicles, and yield to them for your own safety.

  1. Don’t walk in the street. Always walk on the sidewalk or in designated walkways.
