A High Percentage of Motorcycle Accident Injuries and Fatalities Occurs Because Another Vehicle Suddenly Turns Left in Front of a Motorcycle

U.S. NHTSA data shows that in 2006, 2,226 fatal collisions between a motorcycle and another vehicle occurred on U.S. roads. Fully 883, or 40%, of these fatal crashes occurred because another vehicle suddenly turned left in front of the motorcycle. A French study for the European traffic authority showed that these accidents accounted for 32% of motorcycle accident fatalities there.

Studies of the behavior of drivers of enclosed vehicles show that they tend to miscalculate the necessary gap to leave for safety when they’re turning in front of a motorcycle. In other instances, they may not notice the smaller profile of a motorcycle at all.

And because motorcycles travel at speeds just as high as other vehicles, but the bikes offer almost no protection to riders and passengers, motorcycles are the most perilous vehicles to ride on the highway. Motorcycle accidents also generate the highest collision costs per person-mile. Our Bay City motorcycle accident lawyers remind you to play it safe when you ride: always wear a helmet, and anticipate the errors of drivers of heavier, enclosed vehicles.
