East Texas MADD’s 7th “Tie One on for Safety” Luncheon to Prevent DWI

The East Texas chapter of MADD brought together victims injured by drunken drivers, parents of teens killed in DWI accidents, and other people deeply concerned with the dangerous problem of drunken driving in Texas. The gathering to discuss the causes, consequences, and prevention of DWI occurred at their annual “Tie One on for Safety” luncheon.

MADD fights an ongoing battle to raise awareness regarding the dangers of DWI and to end drunken driving. In East Texas alone, about 40% of all traffic fatalities stem from DWI accidents. A full one third of the population of East Texas is affected by drunken driving accidents in some way.

A spokesperson said that MADD’s efforts aren’t about drinking per se. They don’t care if you “tie one on” as long as you’re of age and you don’t endanger others. They DO care if you drink and then choose to get behind the wheel and endanger others. It’s a choice, MADD says. And it’s a dangerous one.

A Texas DPS trooper present at the event said that troopers recognize that DWI accidents are 100% preventable. DPS troopers, far from being hardened by their daily exposure to horrific DWI accidents, get depressed seeing so many innocent lives lost to these ugly, but totally preventable accidents.

MADD continues in its admirable efforts to help end drunken driving in our time through numerous initiatives.

Conducting educational and awareness campaigns to inform others about the danger of DWI.

Supporting high visibility anti-DWI law enforcement efforts.

Working towards requiring in-vehicle breathalyzers or ignition interlock devices in the vehicles of those with prior DWI convictions.

Working with automakers to devise ways for vehicles to automatically detect whether a driver’s blood alcohol level is above the legal limit.
Since its founding, MADD has made great strides in raising consciousness about the dangers of DWI. MADD has been instrumental in getting enforcement efforts and penalties stepped up against drunken drivers. But the problem continues to plague us, with thousands of fatalities and catastrophic injuries resulting each year from DWI accidents.
