Wednesday afternoon around 5:30 the driver of a westbound black SUV veered into oncoming traffic on Briarcrest Drive and Freedom Boulevard. The driver smashed into a Nissan sedan. Gladys Florence, 86, a passenger in the backseat of the Nissan, was killed in the impact. The errant SUV continued the wrong way down Briarcrest and struck a white SUV, then veered off into the parking lot of a Chick-Fil-A and crashed into a parked Ford Explorer.
Our Pearland personal injury lawyers sadly note that in addition to the life tragically lost in the crash, four people were hospitalized with injuries from the crash. Authorities blocked the roadway for more than three hours as they investigated and reconstructed the deadly four-vehicle wrong way wreck. Accounts of the incident did not disclose what caused the driver of the black SUV to drive into oncoming traffic and cause such a devastating wreck. (Source: Andrea Salazar, The Eagle, 8/8/13)

Wrong Way Driving can take a Deadly Toll in Just Seconds
There’s almost no margin of error if a driver suddenly veers into oncoming traffic. A car driving 45 mph can travel around the length of two football fields in two seconds. NHTSA data shows that about 60% of wrong way crashes are caused by alcohol-impaired drivers. But texting while driving has been receiving an increasing amount of attention as a cause of head-on wrong way impacts.
Texting isn’t the only culprit. Any type of distraction or inattention to the roadway could send a vehicle drifting into oncoming lanes of traffic. Reaching over to change the music or retrieve an item from a purse or another seat, or even just being drowsy behind the wheel, could lead to a deadly head-on wrong way impact. Driver medical conditions or vehicle equipment failures can also cause wrong way impacts. Many crashes are avoidable. Our Pearland personal injury lawyers remind you to always keep your attention on the road, and stay alert behind the wheel. Changing the music or reading a text can wait until you’re parked at a stoplight or in a parking lot. And get needed rest before you drive.
