Our Galveston cargo accident lawyers note this surprise shipment of spiders as an example of the many unexpected dangers that might await cargo handlers on docks, ships, and in warehouses.
A Navy shipbuilder around Bath, Maine had to give a warehouse and part of a warship a fumigation bath due to some unexpected and dangerous stowaways in a shipment of vertical launch system components. The stowaways seeking free berths on the warship USS Michael Murphy were highly venomous black widow spiders.
It has long been a tradition for widows of means to travel. Unfortunately, the currency used by black widow spiders won’t pay for a fine stateroom on a cruise ship. So these enterprising spiders sought another means of transport: a U.S. destroyer.
Our Galveston cargo accident lawyers read that employees of Bath Iron Works found the black widow spiders in a crate of launch components out of California. The spiders were not declared on the shipping manifest.
Exterminators fumigated a warehouse in Bath and another in Brunswick, as well as several compartments of the USS Michael Murphy. A spokesman said that he was confident that exterminators managed to eliminate any of the dangerous cargo that weren’t already stomped.
Having once unexpectedly encountered a black widow spider here in Texas, I mention that a good whack from a solid library book will also solve the problem. As Galveston cargo accident lawyers, we know that ships’ crewmembers, dock workers, and just about anyone that has occasion to be near shipping containers can suffer unexpected injury or even death from cargo accidents.
The cause of cargo accidents is often related to overloading of containers as shippers try to save money by shipping larger weights than they declare. Cargo stacks aboard ship regularly collapse from excess weights. These collapses occur in warehouses and on docks as well. Forklifts sometimes tip over from excess, undeclared cargo container weights. And real dangers ensue when cargo weights exceed the capacity of cranes used to move the cargo.
