Are Curbside Motorcoach Buses less Safe than other U.S. Bus Services?

After a horrific accident that killed 15 bus passengers and seriously injured 18 in 2011, the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), began conducting an investigation on curbside motorcoach safety. Our Pearland, Texas bus accident injury attorneys note that the bus that crashed on I-95 was operated by World Wide Travel of Greater New York and was traveling between New York City and a Connecticut casino. The fatal casino bus crash occurred when the coach ran off the road, collided with a highway sign support poll that sheared off the much of the top of the bus.

Curbside motorcoach service has been growing in popularity over the last couple of decades due to inexpensive fares and convenience. Few of the buses crash, but when they do, the accidents tend to be remarkably severe, as a recent fatal casino bus crash in Irving, Texas reveals. An NTSB Study Shows that Curbside Motorcoach Buses have Higher Numbers of Fatal Accidents

The NTSB Special Report on Curbside Motorcoach Safety, issued in October 2011, mentioned that at that time, 71 of 4,172 coach bus services in the United States had been identified. But the report also mentioned that such curbside motorcoach services were difficult to identify because they tended to change names frequently, and use P.O. box addresses since as curbside pickup services, they did not have permanent facilities.

The NTSB study found that curbside motorcoach services showed higher rates of fatal accidents and out-of-service rates from driver violations than non-curbside bus services. The driver violations include driver fitness problems, driver fatigue, and driver logbook infractions. Our Pearland, Texas bus accident injury attorneys point out that drivers are supposed to keep logbooks of their hours and miles driven in order to show compliance with regulations. In order to prevent driver fatigue, regulators have limited the number of consecutive hours that drivers may drive.
