A spokesperson from Whiting Turner Construction said that Carroll Dexter Wills died instantly when a 55,000-pound concrete slab suddenly collapsed on top of him. Mr. Wills, an ironworker for 33 years, was working on the extensive renovation of the Westfield Mall in Montgomery County, Maryland.
Our parking deck collapse attorneys note that the 4th level of the old parking deck at the mall was being torn down so that the parking structure could be rebuilt in a different way to support a 16-screen movie theater intended to sit atop the parking garage.
Another worker was rescued form the Westfield Mall parking deck collapse. Rescuers worked for hours to stabilize shifting, collapsed concrete in order to rescue the man. Although he was critically injured in the collapse, he was reportedly alert and talking as rescuers pulled him out and transported him to the hospital. Our hearts and prayers are with the family and friends of Mr. Carroll Dexter Wills and with the injured construction worker and his family.
Cause of the Deadly Parking Deck Collapse Remains under Investigation
Investigators were working to determine the actual cause of the deadly Westfield Mall parking deck collapse. Parking structures generally contain fewer “redundant” safety/support features than inhabited structures. So should a support beam, a column, or even a single weld fail, a major part of the structure could suddenly collapse.
Many parking deck collapses and other building collapses occur during construction or demolition of a structure. Our parking deck collapse attorneys emphasize that during these transitional stages, temporary bracings and methodical work are very important to keep key structural support members or connections from suddenly failing.
