Summer fun turned unexpectedly toxic at Raging Waters, a Sacramento, CA water park, on Monday, August 15, 2011. Reports indicate that 20 people, including 9 children, went to Sacramento area hospitals complaining of burning eyes and respiratory tracts after the water park chlorine accident. Current indications point to a defect in the pump mechanism that injects chlorine into the wave pool at the park.
While swimming pools require chlorine to kill germs, large amounts of chlorine quickly become toxic. In this instance, such a large amount of chlorine entered the pool that the water could not absorb the substance, and it became airborne as chlorine gas. Park employees and guests quickly evacuated the pool area after the chlorine gas cloud emerged. The pool remains closed pending investigations by Cal/OSHA of the water park chlorine accident. Reports indicate that Raging Waters received only 1 citation for a minor safety violation since 2008, and this violation was unrelated to the chlorine mechanism.
We hope for a quick recovery for the many victims of this water park chlorine accident. Surely none of them expected to suffer a toxic chlorine gas attack during their relief from the summer heat at a water park. The worst gas attack one usually expects at a water park is a few suspicious bubbles rising to the surface of the pool beside a nearby swimmer (who may or may not have a sheepishly guilty look on his face).
