Boy’s Tragic Death in Amarillo, Hit by 2 Freight Trains, is a Warning to Never Try and Beat a Train at a Railroad Crossing

Never try to beat a train at a railroad crossing. Our Texas train collision attorneys caution that if your vehicle stalls, your tires get caught in the tracks, or you just aren’t fast enough, the result could be serious injury or death. As a recent Amarillo train crash death reveals, bypassing crossing gates and trying to beat a train could be deadly for innocent victims.

On August 10, Edgar Rangel reportedly tried to drive his pickup truck around railroad crossing gates in Amarillo as two freight trains approached. A 4-year-old boy was in the truck with him. Rangel didn’t make it across the tracks in time, and the pickup truck was hit by BOTH freight trains. The boy was fatally ejected from the truck and Rangel was hospitalized for more than a week with his injuries after being hit by the two freight trains.

Our Texas train collision attorneys note that police have arrested Edgar Rangel and charged him with manslaughter, saying the train crash and reckless attempt to drive around the railroad crossing gates were alcohol-related. (Source: Associated Press, 8/20/13)

Every Day there are 6 or More Train Collisions in the United States

A train collides with a vehicle or a pedestrian somewhere in the United States every 3 to 4 hours. That’s 6 or more potentially fatal train collisions EACH DAY. Remember that drivers are required to stop at least 15 feet away from the railroad tracks when they see or hear:

  • A railroad crossing signal,
  • A lowered crossing gate bar across the tracks,
  • A flagger warning of a train’s approach, or
  • An approaching train.

The driver must stop until the railroad crossing warning signal also stops and it is safe to proceed. The Texas train collision attorneys at Denena Points, PC emphasize that vehicle collisions with trains are preventable with proper safety precautions. Drinking, driving, and trying to beat a train at a railroad crossing is reckless in the extreme. Your safety is in your hands. Don’t drink and drive. And don’t try to beat trains at crossings.
