Just after midnight on August 24, 2011, the driver of a big rig hauling boxes of polystyrene pellets lost control of his vehicle on a curve of northbound I-35 near downtown Dallas. The truck overturned in a big rig rollover wreck. It spilled its cargo all over the highway. It also leaked about 150 gallons of diesel fuel over the I-35 highway, one of North Texas’ busiest roadways.
The big rig rollover wreck shut down most of the highway to Dallas morning commuters as workers rushed to contain the fuel leak, clean up the cargo spill, and get the truck upright on its wheels again. 9 hours after the big rig wreck, two of the northbound lanes of I-35 remained closed to commuters. The news reports that investigators believe that speed and a shifting cargo load may have been factors in the truck accident. Both the truck driver and a passenger made it safely out of the wrecked truck.
We’re glad to see that no injuries resulted from this spectacular big rig rollover wreck. Though we suspect that many a Dallas commuter, tied up in lengthy I-35 traffic delays, was wishing vague harms upon whatever caused the delays. A shifting cargo load is a classic cause of truck rollover wrecks. Taking a curve at too great of a speed is a classic cause of vehicle rollover wrecks generally. ESC technology can help compensate for a loss of road traction on a curve. But if a vehicle’s speed is too great, or its load shifts substantially, ESC technology won’t be able to prevent a rollover wreck.
