AZ research study links over 20% of AED fatalities to power failures

Pearland medical device attorneys present some important research results regarding AED (automated external defibrillator) medical devices that you should know. The authors of an Arizona Emergency Medical Research Center study used the federal FDA MAUDE (Manufacturer and User Device Experience) database to trace the incidence of power-failure related fatalities from use of AED medical devices. The authors studied the data from 1993 to 2008. They found 1,150 failures among the 40,787 reports of AED failures that represented fatalities. Reports involving injury, but no fatality, weren’t included in the study.

  • 45% of the AED failures happened during attempts to charge the AED medical devices to deliver shocks to the heart.
  • 22% of the AED failures occurred during the heart rhythm diagnostic phase of the procedure. The defective AED medical devices powered on but failed to perform a complete heart rhythm analysis of the patient.
  • 13% of the AED failure cases relied on backup devices to deliver electric shocks to the patients’ hearts.
  • 4.7% of AED failure cases presented a low-battery reading.
  • 9.6% of AED failures involved the AED medical devices powering off unexpectedly.
  • 23.2% of cases cited battery and power problems as the causes of the AED failures.
  • 23.7% of the cases cited pads and connectors as the sources of the AED failures.

Our Pearland medical device attorneys find that the research study indicates a clear conclusion. AED medical devices aren’t always as reliable as we’d like to believe. Like any pieces of complex technology, AED medical devices are subject to power failures, self-diagnostic system failures, inexplicable behavior, and all sorts of AED failures. AED medical devices should save lives. But sometimes AEDs take lives.
