Sunday around 2:30 a.m., Jon Fontana was driving a Toyota Camry eastbound on westbound Highway 290 by the Grand Parkway when he struck a Jeep Liberty head-on. The Jeep was carrying students from Texas A&M University to school. Jon Fontana died in the head-on wrong way crash, and the four Texas Aggies were hospitalized in stable condition. (WFAA News Dallas Ft. Worth, 3/17/14) The thoughts and prayers of our Highway 290 accident injury attorneys are with the injured students and their families as they recover.
This Wreck Eerily Similar to a Crash this Time Last Year that Claimed the Lives of 4 Texas Aggies
It was at almost this same time last year that another Highway 290 wrong way wreck, where a Ford Explorer on the wrong side of the road struck a Mustang occupied by several Texas A&M students, killed 4 members of the Texas Aggie Corps of Cadets. That wrong way crash occurred on nearly the same stretch of Highway 290, also in the wee hours of the morning. The similarity of the two wrecks indicates that maybe TxDOT should examine this area of 290 to see if additional warnings or protections against wrong way driving might be appropriate. Rumble strips or centerline bumps could help warn fatigued drivers when they’re wandering out of their lane at night.
Wrong Way Wrecks Particularly Dangerous
Most wrong way crashes happen at high speed and involve head-on collisions. The high-speed frontal impacts can be particularly dangerous, frequently causing severe neck and spinal injuries, traumatic brain injuries, or death. About 60% of wrong way drivers are also impaired by alcohol. But when these crashes happen in the early morning hours, sometimes it’s a drowsy driver that has dozed off behind the wheel.
