Cement Trucks have a Very High Rollover Risk
Cement trucks with their heavy loads are particularly unstable on turns and curves. If the cement truck is traveling at a decent speed, that speed vastly magnifies the risk of an unpredictable load shift and rollover wreck. With their high centers of gravity, cement trucks can easily roll over even at a mere 5 mph.
Our Pearland truck accident lawyers note that cement trucks, also called cement mixers, frequently weigh up to 60 tons (that’s 120,000 pounds). Drivers need special training to be able to handle cement mixers because they are extremely top-heavy. The cement trucks have a very high center of gravity and carry very high rollover risks, especially on turns.
A cement mixer’s rollover risk is magnified by its speed. Cement truck drivers face challenges because the concrete mixtures must be delivered quickly before they harden. And if the mixture spills during a rollover, cleanup is not pleasant. The payload of cement also must turn evenly because if it shifts to one side, the weight of the load can easily overturn the truck.
Our Pearland truck accident lawyers urge you to drive safely. Give cement trucks extra clearance on turns. And never cut in front of them. Their heavy loads mean that the trucks are not as readily maneuverable as lighter passenger vehicles.
