The Design of Texas Streets Contributes to the Frequency and Severity of Pedestrian Accidents

Texas has a car-centric culture. Our streets and highways are designed to facilitate motor vehicle travel, with little or no thought given for the needs of pedestrians and bicyclists. Sidewalks are either narrow or non-existent. Roadways my have little lighting other than what the headlights of passing vehicles provide. And crosswalks and other pedestrian-oriented safety features are few and far between.

Studies show that in the last few years, perhaps due to the weak economy, there has been a growing interest among the public in transportation alternatives like walking, biking, and riding public transportation. Some urban redesign initiatives are planning for more pedestrian and bicyclist safety features to encourage people to use alternative means of transportation. But our Galveston pedestrian injury lawyers note that such initiatives remain rare in our car-centric state of Texas.
