Texas’ own Blue Bell Creamery lost a respected senior manager Monday afternoon around 2:30 in a tragic accident on I-10 near Baytown. And another senior manager was severely injured. Bill Weiss, Public Relations Manager, and Steve James, Vice President of Institutional Sales, were reportedly changing a flat tire when a motor vehicle struck them on I-10.
Our Baytown accident attorneys report that the two men received Life Flight transport to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston. Mr. Weiss, a graduate of Texas A&M, died on the way to Memorial Hermann. Mr. James had surgery and was said to be in critical condition.
The tragic accident remains under investigation. (Sources: KWHI.com and KBTX.com, 6/4/13) Accounts of the tragic accident did not clarify what caused the driver to strike the two men nor whether it was a hit and run accident.
The Baytown accident attorneys at Denena Points, PC express their deepest sympathies to the friends, family, and colleagues of Mr. Bill Weiss. And we wish Mr. James a swift and complete recovery from his injuries.
The Shoulders of Texas Roadways are Dangerous Places
Statistics show that about 12% of fatal traffic accidents occur when a moving vehicle hits someone on the side of the road. The victim might be a pedestrian, someone changing a flat tire, rescue personnel responding to an accident, a construction worker, or anyone else that happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
If drivers are speeding, distracted, drowsy, or drunk, they often do not see disabled vehicles or pedestrians at the shoulder of the roadway until it’s too late. And if the driver is impaired, that driver might be unable to keep to the roadway or to a single lane, presenting an imminent danger to anyone with a disabled vehicle on the shoulders of Texas roadways.
Sadly, our Baytown accident attorneys report that these road shoulder accidents happen far too frequently on our congested Texas highways.
