The balcony collapse lawyers at Denena & Points note that an Austin balcony partially collapsed for the second time in a single week on a Thursday. The balcony stood on the Wood Ridge Apartments on Burton Drive in southeast Austin. The walkway balcony at the apartments had initially dropped a chunk of its structure on Wednesday after first swaying and sagging while residents were standing on it.

Then the following day, more of the balcony collapsed right in front of cameras of a news team that had come to report on the earlier collapse. More than 50 complaints have been filed against the apartment complex where the dangerous balcony collapse occurred. Residents say that standing water is causing concrete to deteriorate, but that the complex doesn’t make needed repairs.

Austin says that the city doesn’t regularly inspect condos and apartments because it just doesn’t have the manpower. But other than a dangerous stairwell found and corrected in the 1990s, Austin says the violations at the Wood Ridge Apartments have been minor. Elsewhere today, a tragic death occurred in Detroit because of the sudden failure of a second story porch railing. Harriet Johnson, 49, died when the second story railing on her porch gave way and she fell. A friend with her on the porch received transport to the hospital in stable condition with injuries from the fall.

The porch rail collapse occurred on Joy Road near I-96 and Livernois just before 2 a.m. Reports say that he black metal porch railing could still be seen dangling from the second story where it had been attached to two front brick posts.
