Houston Driver Flees Police, Slams into Cars, Cement Truck, Kills Man | DENENA | POINTS

Houston police say that early Tuesday morning around 7 an officer spotted 18-year-old Dalia Iris Alfaro driving a silver-gray Dodge pickup truck in a suspicious manner. The officer pursued and Alfaro ran through red lights during rush hour traffic until she crashed into a car at Kirkwood and Westheimer. Our Houston wrongful death attorneys report that when the officer got out of his vehicle to approach the stopped Dodge pickup truck, Dalia Iris Alfaro drove away again on Westheimer.

The officer pursued. Alfaro then reportedly ran another red light at Eldridge Parkway and smashed into multiple vehicles. The Dodge pickup sideswiped a Mazda, then crashed into the driver’s side of a Chevy Impala, killing the driver, Natividad Alanis, before finally colliding head-on with a cement truck. Mr. Alanis, a beloved family man, had been on his way to work at the time of the fatal crash.

Alfaro was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Several people in the vehicles she struck also had minor injuries. Natividad Alanis, the driver of the Chevy Impala Alfaro hit, died at the scene. (Sources: Dale Lezon, Houston Chronicle; and Adela Uchida, KTRK ABC 13, 8/6/13)

Authorities closed down the roadway for about 4 hours to investigate the accident and clear the scene. Police say Alfaro showed signs of being impaired. A blood draw was taken at the hospital to test for impairment.

The Houston wrongful death attorneys at Denena Points, PC convey their sincere sympathies to the family, friends, and colleagues of Mr. Alanis. We wish the injured victims of Alfaro’s crashes safe and rapid recoveries from their injuries.

Hundreds Die and More than 100,000 are Injured each Year when Drivers run Red Lights

In a recent year, almost 700 people died and about 113,000 received injuries because drivers ran red lights. Running red lights and stop signs are among the most dangerous driving mistakes one can make. The negligent driver could die in the resulting intersection crash almost as easily as an innocent victim. IIHS data shows that about 36% of those who die in these crashes are the reckless drivers who ran the red lights. The remainder are innocent victims. Our Houston wrongful death attorneys note that the IIHS data also shows that 25% of the drivers who ran the red lights were impaired. Click the link to read more about the criminal and civil penalties possible for impaired drivers and those who over-serve them alcohol.
