18 Wheeler and Car Crash Claims Lives of 5 TEXAS Musical Members

A devastating Monday night collision between an 18-wheeler and a car claimed the lives of 5 members of the cast and staff of the long-running musical, TEXAS, performed in Palo Duro Canyon in the Texas panhandle for the past 48 years. 1 other member of the musical family was critically injured in the crash and remains hospitalized. The 18-wheeler driver also sustained serious injuries in the collision. Our Texas wrongful death attorneys sadly report that 4 of the deceased were dancers and one was a member of the box office staff.

The 6 TEXAS musical members were returning from a party at a ranch near Dumas when the crash occurred. A DPS spokesman said that driver Clinton Diaz of Amarillo disregarded a stop sign as he tried to turn onto Highway 287 north of Amarillo and pulled in front of an 18-wheeler. The big rig struck the smaller vehicle broadside on the passenger side. The 18-wheeler’s cargo load was dislodged from the trailer in the crash and landed on the car’s driver’s side.

TEXAS musical cast and staff members were pronounced dead at the scene of the devastating crash. The Texas DPS said that alcohol is suspected as a factor in the accident.

The names of the cast and staff members who lost their lives to the devastating TEXAS musical crashwere given as:

  • Eric Harrison of Fort Worth, 21;
  • Clinton Diaz of Amarillo, 20;
  • Amanda Starz of Timonium, Maryland, 20;
  • Andrew Duncan of Wichita Falls, 20; and
  • Julian Arredondo of Haltom City, 24.

Timothy Johnson of Houston, 30, was listed in critical condition. And Theron Arthur McSay of Fort Collins, Colorado, 70, was listed in stable condition. (Sources: Betsy Blaney, nbcdfw.com; and myhighplains.com, 8/13/13)

The Texas wrongful death attorneys at Denena Points, PC express their sincere condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of the deceased victims of the Texas panhandle wreck. Our hopes and wishes for complete and rapid recoveries from their wounds go out to the two injured victims of the devastating crash.

Texas has the Largest Number of Fatal Alcohol-Related Accidents in the Nation

TxDOT data reveals that 1,523 fatal crashes occurred in Texas in 2011. 502 of those accidents, which claimed the lives of a total of 570 people, were alcohol-related. Our Texas wrongful death attorneys note that in 2010, drunken driving crashes caused 42% of the fatal wrecks in Texas. In 2010, the NHTSA says there were 2,998 fatal alcohol-related wrecks in Texas, the highest number of fatal drunken driving crashes in the nation.

The Texas wrongful death attorneys at Denena Points, PC hope that the Texas DPS in their investigation will seek out those who over-served the young people from the TEXAS musical their alcohol and then sent them off in a car to brave ruthless Texas highway traffic. We believe such behavior is unconscionable.

Texas laws provide that individuals as well as alcohol-serving public establishments can be charged for over-serving guests. And perhaps if such individuals were charged more frequently with their crimes, it would discourage such behavior in others. Click the link to read about what the Texas TABC laws could do in the event of over-service of alcohol.
