Cement Mixer Trucks Present High Rollover Risks

Cement trucks, because of their loads, are inherently unstable on turns and curves, especially at any speed. Both vehicles were reportedly traveling at 40 to 45 mph when the wreck occurred. With their high centers of gravity, cement trucks can easily fall into rollovers even at 5 mph.

Our Texas truck accident lawyers note that cement trucks, also called mixers, frequently weigh up to 60 tons. Drivers must be specially trained to handle the vehicles, as they are extremely top-heavy. They have a high center of gravity and present high rollover risks on turns. The risk is compounded by speed and drivers face a challenge because the mixture must be delivered quickly before it begins to harden. The payload of cement also must be kept turning evenly because if it shifts to one side, the weight of the load can easily overturn the truck.
