Drunken Driver might have caused Tragic Death of Beaumont News Anchor | DENENA | POINTS

William “Bill” Leger, one of southeast Texas’ most respected news anchors, suffered a tragic double crash on Saturday around 1 a.m. on Highway 93 in Lafayette Parish, LA. Crash investigators are still trying to determine for certain whether the first or the second crash led to his untimely death.

Louisiana state police are saying that initially Mr. Leger’s 2012 Jeep left the roadway on a curve and that Mr. Leger overcorrected his course, which led to the Jeep tripping into a roll. The 2012 Jeep came to rest in the northbound lane of the Highway 93, where a car driven by Clint Melancon, 52, then struck it.

Mr. William Leger died at the scene of the tragic double crash. The police arrested Clint Melancon for DWI because his blood alcohol level was above the legal limit.Melancon was jailed on a DWI first offense and released on $1,000 bond. (Sources: KDFM and Associated Press, 12/22/12)

Mr. Leger, who worked for KFDM in Beaumont, as you may know, was originally from Kinder, LA. The Houston accident attorneys at Denena Points, PC convey their deepest sympathies to his wife, daughters, and other family, friends, and colleagues upon his tragic demise.

DWI is an Ongoing, Deadly Problem throughout our Region

The Houston Chronicle just ran an article describing the deadly toll that the 2011 holiday season took on local roadways, with a total of more than 130 DWI accidents and 6 fatalities. Just for comparison purposes, our Houston accident attorneys mention that there were at least 5 fatalities from DWI accidents only last weekend. So it appears the 2012 holiday season will be even deadlier than last year.

No matter how much we spend on law enforcement and education, we can’t seem to get past the chronic regional threat of fatal DWI accidents. In fact, Harris County traditionally leads the nation in the number of DWI fatalities and accidents. The Houston Chronicle article says that a $295,000 state grant will put at least an additional 50 patrol units on Houston area roads during the 2012 holiday season to try and head off drunken drivers before they take innocent lives. Yet our Houston accident attorneys notice that news reports indicate that drunken drivers might be anywhere at any time.

It’s up to you. Don’t drink and drive. When you’re out enjoying the holiday season, and all year round, if you intend to drink, our Houston accident attorneys urge you to get a designated driver. Non-drinkers love to go to parties too. And they can generally get you home safely without a police incident.
