Cookeville Cattle Truck Wreck Kills 9 (Cattle) & Injures Truck Driver | DENENA | POINTS

Cookeville, TN rescue workers from a variety of sources scrambled to corral scattered, frightened cattle after a cattle truck wrecked at the eastbound lanes of I-40. Monday afternoon shortly after 5 p.m., the cattle truck carrying 29 cattle to a Monterey buyer rolled off the road and down the side of an embankment near the Burgess Falls Road exit. The cattle truck overturned and came to rest on its side.

Some of the cattle received fatal injuries while still inside the 2001 Freightliner’s cattle trailer. Others were so badly injured they had to be put down. Still others escaped from the trailer and understandably fled the scene of the devastating cattle truck wreck.

News reports state that the injured truck driver, Ronald Vance of Sparta, was taken to Cookeville Regional Medical Center, and that his injuries weren’t believed to be life threatening. Veterinarians Dr. George Boyd and Dr. Tiffany Krantz responded to the scene to attend to cattle injured in the cattle truck wreck.

In a team effort, Fire Department rescue workers, State Troopers, Cookeville police, officers from the Putnam Sheriff’s office, and workers from the Cookeville People’s Stockyard, the Dept. of Agriculture, Hyder-Burks at Tennessee Tech, the DOT, and the Putnam Rescue Squad all pitched in to direct traffic and to corral the escaped cattle before they could cause additional highway accidents.

Cookeville Fire Department Capt. Darryl Blair said that public safety provided the team’s primary concern in addressing the aftermath of the bad cattle truck wreck. An emergency worker stated that the accident could easily “have been a disaster.”

The lawyers of Denena Points, PC are saddened to hear of the injury and fatality toll of this cattle truck wreck that sounds so much like a Texas highway accident. We’re impressed by the coordinated team effort that got the accident scene under control with no further accidents or injuries to report.
