La Porte Explosion at Akzo Nobel plant Hospitalizes Worker with Burns | DENENA | POINTS

Monday afternoon about 1 p.m., an explosion tore through the Akzo Nobel Polymer Chemicals plant by Highway 225 in La Porte, Texas. The explosion set off a fire and billows of black smoke that sent a contract worker to Memorial Hermann Hospital with burns and possible injuries from the heavy smoke. 80 other workers were reportedly evacuated safely from the blaze.

An Akzo Nobel spokeswoman indicated that the fire was in the magnesium oxide unit, and that the company was working to discover the cause of the explosion and fire. Firefighters were on hand from the La Porte and Deer Park fire departments as well as from FEMA. Contract workers are not covered by worker’s compensation under the Texas worker’s comp statute. But sometimes a worker is actually an employee, even if he’s called a contractor, and eligible for worker’s compensation for his injuries. And where he’s an actual contractor and not an employee, he has other alternatives for seeking financial compensation for his injuries. And that compensation might actually pay him more than the minimal amounts offered under worker’s comp.

Another Plant Explosion and Fire in La Porte in February Killed a Worker and Seriously Injured Another Worker

The Texas Gulf Coast is home to an enormous number of oil refineries, oil and gas storage tanks, chemical plants, and gas plants. Substances released in explosions and fires can sometimes pollute surrounding business and residential areas. And our La Porte work accident attorneys point out that local municipalities regularly issue shelter-in-place orders when these dangerous accidents occur.

Texas workers suffer the larger proportion of the injuries and fatalities from these industrial accidents. For example, on February 9th, an explosion occurred at the Air Liquide gas cylinder plant on Fairmount Parkway. The explosion apparently happened in the mixing area and blew a huge hole in the roof of the plant. One technician died in the blast, and another was hospitalized with serious burns. Click here to read more about that deadly La Porte plant explosion.
