Police have cited an 80-year-old driver after she ran a red light and caused a serious city bus injury accident in Beaumont, Texas on Wednesday morning. The woman ran a red light at Avenue C and Washington Boulevard and slammed her Chrysler 300 into the back of a city bus.
The force of the impact reportedly hurled the bus driver from the driver’s seat and to the floor of the bus, shattered bus windows, and then sent the bus crashing into a vacant house. 10 people, including both drivers, were taken to the hospital after the accident. (Manuella Libardi, Beaumont Enterprise, 3/27/14) The thoughts and good wishes of our Beaumont bus accident injury attorneys are with the accident victims, hoping for their rapid and full recoveries from the crash.
This Bus Crash one of a Series at this Beaumont Intersection
According to KBMT 12 News, this serious crash is the 3rd one involving a bus at this particular intersection in the past 8 months. And in all three crashes, it was the other driver, not the bus driver, who was reportedly at fault. These statistics seem to defy probability. Our Beaumont bus accident injury attorneys suggest that City planners might need to take a look at this intersection to see if additional warnings about an upcoming stop might be in order, or whether something else needs to be done to make the traffic light more visible.
Intersection Crashes an all too Common Cause of Crash Injury and Death
The NHTSA Traffic Safety Facts report for 2008 documented over 2.3 million reported intersection crashes that left more than 7,770 people dead and nearly 750,000 injured. The intersection crashes account for approximately 1 in 5 of all U.S. traffic deaths that year.
Intersection crashes caused by those who run stop signs or traffic signals can be particularly deadly because they tend to occur at high speeds and involve side impacts. Built-in vehicle crush zones, which can help protect passengers and drivers in a wreck, are much thinner on the sides than in the front or rear of a vehicle. The concerned Beaumont bus accident injury attorneys at Denena Points, PC emphasize that only about 36% of the intersection accident fatalities involve the driver who ran the signal; the rest are occupants of the other vehicles, passengers of the offending driver, or pedestrians who were in the intersection at the time.
