Minor Highway 290 accident ends with double fatal drunk driving crash

Drunken driving claims many innocent victims each year in the Houston area. Statistics made Harris County for many years the drunken driving capital of the nation, and a tragic Saturday morning crash reveals why.

Around 2 a.m. on Saturday morning, two vehicles collided in a minor fender bender crash onHighway 290 by 34th Street. A Ford Explorer had rear-ended a Chevy Silverado. The driver of the Chevy Silverado and a passenger exited the truck to exchange insurance and contact information with the driver of the Ford Explorer.

The Chevy Silverado driver suspected that the driver of the Ford Explorer that had rear-ended him was intoxicated, so he returned to his own truck to call the police. His passenger and the driver of the Ford Explorer remained standing outside of the two vehicles.

And then a Lincoln Navigator piloted by another suspected drunken driver came along and rammed into the Chevy Silverado and the Ford Explorer. The sudden crash took the lives of both the Silverado passenger and the Ford Explorer driver. The driver of the Lincoln Navigator was arrested and charged with intoxication manslaughter after the double fatal drunk driving crash. (Source: click2houston.com, 10/13/12)

A minor fender bender crash caused by one suspected drunken driver then led to a double fatal drunk driving crash caused by another intoxicated driver. Harris County often presents accident scenes where a confluence of drunken drivers has taken their deadly toll.

Back in July, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office had announced both a steadily increasing number of DWI arrests over the last five years, plus a decline in DWI fatalities that had put Harris County on track for the lowest number of drunk driving-related deaths in five years. Recent weeks, however, have seen an alarming number of horrific alcohol-related crashes like Saturday’s double fatal drunk driving crash on Highway 290.
