Driver distraction leads to critical injuries in Highway 90 crash

The Houston accident injury lawyers at Denena & Points note a devastating crash on Highway 90 that has critically injured a young man. Harris County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene of a serious accident on Tuesday night on Highway 90 by Beltway 8. Deputies said a man in his 20s veered across the highway into oncoming traffic and then smashed his vehicle into a concrete pillar.

Our Houston accident injury lawyers emphasize that distracted driving has been increasing as a cause of accidents nationwide in recent years. In addition to all the other traditional causes of driver distraction such as children or pets in the vehicle, changing the music, and eating while driving, we now have texting and cell phone calls to contend with behind the wheel.

The major types of distracted driving can be classified in three ways:

  • Manual – taking your hands off the wheel as you drive.
  • Visual – taking your eyes off the road.
  • Cognitive – Thinking about something else while you drive and taking your mind off the road. You may have had someone waiting behind you at a red light, for instance, honk when you were distracted and failed to notice the light turn green.

Whatever the cause of your driver distraction and whatever form it takes, you should be aware that taking your attention from the road for even a moment while you’re behind the wheel can be extremely dangerous. The unfortunate man who was injured in the NW Harris County crash into a concrete pillar provides a sobering example of what can happen.

Complex traffic patterns, the unpredictability of other (perhaps also distracted) drivers, and the high speeds we can reach in our vehicles all mean that even a second’s distraction could lead to serious or fatal injury. Our Houston accident injury lawyers urge you to keep your focus on the road while you’re behind the wheel and increase your chances of safely arriving at your destination.
