Major Harris County Crashes Ring in the New Year

Harris County apparently remains the leading locus for DWI crashes nationwide. On New Year’s day in Houston, KHOU reports that about a dozen major crashes occurred just inside the city limits. This dirty dozen on a single night doesn’t even account for crashes that happened in neighboring Montgomery County or in Galveston.

One of the Houston crashes involved an eastbound Chevy Silverado pickup truck reportedly driven by Diego Islas, 21, that ran a red light on Pierce Street and broad-sided a Mercedes C230. The man riding in the back seat died at the scene of the major crash. The woman driving the Mercedes, mentioned as that man’s wife in some news accounts, received transport to a hospital with serious injuries but is expected to fully recover.

Police took custody of Diego Islas at the horrific crash scene and performed a blood draw. He has been charged with intoxication manslaughter.
