838 people died in fatal intersection crashes in Texas in 2012. Many of these deaths occurred when drivers disregarded stop signs or red lights and struck other vehicles. The Houston intersection crash injury attorneys at Denena Points, PC report that there were 3,028 crashes in rural Texas and 13,772 in urban areas because drivers ran red lights or stop signs.
For example, about 1 a.m. on Sunday, a shoplifter reportedly sped out of a Wal*Mart parking lot in suburban Houston in a pickup truck after jacking a Hello Kitty purse and pushing a security guard to the ground. She then ran a red light and crashed into a car in an intersection. The woman driving the car she struck was killed instantly. The woman’s teenaged daughter was airlifted to a hospital with injuries from the intersection crash in Pasadena. The driver of the pickup truck was arrested pending charges. And last Monday in Liberty, Texas, Javier Garcia-Robles of Mexico City reportedly drove a bobtail truck through a red light and struck a Chevy Tahoe turning on U.S. 90 from the SH 146 bypass. The crash killed a Hankamer woman at the scene of the wreck and hospitalized her vehicle’s passenger. Three other vehicles stopped in the SH 146 bypass turning lane were also damaged in the crash. At least one person from those vehicles was also taken to the hospital with injuries. (yourhoustonnews.com, 12/13/13) The news account made no mention of whether the bobtail truck driver was taken into custody or charged.
Our condolences go out to the families and friends of those killed in these needless crashes. We wish the injured victims rapid and safe recoveries.
There’s no excuse for disregarding a stop, zooming through an intersection, and taking a life. No Hello Kitty purse ever made is worth the mother’s life that was lost in the Pasadena crash. And the loss of the woman’s life near Humble, Texas because a bobtail truck driver didn’t stop at a light is equally inexcusable.
Our Houston intersection crash injury attorneys understand that victims and their families need to hold the drivers who run red lights financially accountable for their acts in civil lawsuits even as the state holds the drivers criminally liable.
