Missing Stop Sign Led to Catastrophic Crash at Cullen Blvd, Schurmier

On Wednesday night just before 10, the driver of a Nissan Altima traveled into an intersection at Cullen Boulevard and Schurmier Road unaware that the Altima should have stopped. The Houston intersection collision lawyers at Denena Points, PC emphasize that reports indicate that the stop sign that would have told the driver to safely stop before entering the intersection was apparently missing.

So an oncoming pickup truck with the right of way slammed into the Altima. The force of the intersection crash sent both vehicles into rollovers. They landed in a ditch near the intersection of Cullen Boulevard and Schurmier Road on Houston’s south side. The driver of the pickup truck became entrapped in the wreckage of the vehicle. Houston firefighters extracted the seriously injured driver. The pickup truck driver received transport to the hospital. Our Houston intersection collision lawyers note that the Nissan Altima driver could be treated for more minor injuries at the scene.

The driver of the Altima mentioned that he was not familiar with the area, so did not know a stop sign should have halted him at the intersection. And police indicated that a previous intersection crash at that location might have caused the loss of the stop sign.

Authorities are supposed to replace damaged warning signs at once for your safety. A resident said the sign had been missing for several months. Authorities thought the missing stop sign had been reported to Houston’s public works department, but apparently it hadn’t. And Harris County said the stop sign location is on the Houston side of the county/city border. A news report by KHOU indicated that staff at KHOU responsibly reported the missing sign to ensure it gets replaced. (Source: khou.com, 4/4/13)

The U.S. FHWA says that about 72% of the time when a fatal intersection crash occurs, it happens because there’s no signal or stop sign at the crossing, and one driver fails to yield to another. As the catastrophic collision at Cullen and Schurmier reveals, that failure to yield might be unintentional, and the result of a missing stop sign. But our Houston intersection collision lawyers point out that the resulting injuries from such an intersection crash are no less severe for the drivers’ innocence.
